The first album is not the official Hilary Duff Santa Claus Lane album released on 15 October 2002 only for the U.S. market before being released in Italy December 1, 2006 in the United Kingdom October 23, 2006. In the U.S., the disc came to 154esima on the Billboard 200 in Italy while the album went almost unnoticed as well as in the United Kingdom. The disc included a few Christmas songs sung by Duff and some included only a few duets with Lil ' Romeo, Christina Milian and her sister Haylie Duff. It was published a special edition of the disc with some bonus tracks October 14, 2003. The first single was released October 14, 2002 and this is Tell Me a Story (About the Night Before) duet with Lil 'Romeo as the second single of the same name was Santa Claus Lane issued December 2, 2002. Duff also recorded a song, the same year, called I Can not Wait for the Disney Channel television series Lizzie McGuire, champion and plays his launching pad.

The first album Metamorphosis by Hilary Duff, released August 26, 2003, preceded by lead single So Yesterday pubblicato il 26 luglio 2003 e che riscosse un immenso successo nelle classifiche statunitensi alla 42esima posizione della Billboard 200 mentre in Canada raggiunse la seconda posizione. In Italia l'album venne rilasciato il 14 novembre 2003 mentre nel Regno Unito il 1 settembre 2003 ma non entrò nemmeno in classifica in quanto passò totalmente inosservato. Per quanto riguarda il singolo in italia arrivò alla 18esima posizione e nel Regno Unito alla nona posizione e visto lo scarso successo il disco venne ritirato dal mercato in entrambi i paesi per attendere l'arrivo del primo greatest hits in modo da riproporre il debutto, che in quel caso riscosse molto apprezzamento. Il secondo singolo è Come Clean, rilasciato il 17 gennaio 2004 e raggiunse la 35esima on the Billboard 200 while in Europe just was not published. Come Clean received a nomination for MTV Video Music Awards 2004 for Best Pop Video. The third and final single was Little Voice, issued June 15, 2004, and only for the Australian market in both Canada and reached the position 29. The album was certified platinum in the U.S. held for over 3 times even if the disc's most successful Duff remains the greatest hits album Most Wanted. Also recorded in the same year hit What Dreams Are Made Of Lizzie McGuire for Disney films: A high school Popstar.
Hilary Duff Hilary Duff's second album was released exclusively for the market in the U.S., Canada and Australia il 28 settembre 2004 e riscosse uno strabiliante successo tanto da raggiungere la seconda posizione della statunitense Billboard 200 mentre raggiunse la prima in Canada e la sesta in Australia. Il singolo che ha anticipato l'uscita dell'album è Fly, pubblicato nell'agosto 2004 e non entrò all'interno delle classifiche di tutti i paesi in cui era stato rilasciato. Il secondo singolo è The Getaway rilasciato nel novembre 2004 mentre nel dicembre 2004 è stato rilasciato il terzo singolo I Am entrambi solo per l'airplay radiofonico e no come cd singolo. Il quarto singolo è stato rilasciato il 21 febbraio 2005 è porta il titolo Someone's Watching Over Me e ha ottenuto un giudizio negativo dalla critica che accusò che la voce di Hilary presente nella canzone fosse stata modificata, ma nonostante tutto ha riscosso un discreto successo nel mondo per via del film in cui era stata inclusa e in cui era proprio la Duff la protagonista. Il film è Nata Per Vincere uscito anche in Italia ma non ottenne minimamente successo in quanto poco sonsorizzato. In Europa l'album non venne mai pubblicato anche se alcune canzoni sono presento nell'album 4ever Hilary Duff. Nello stesso anno ha registrato la canzone, insieme alla sorella Haylie Duff, Our Lips Are Sealed per la colonna sonora del film, in cui lei stessa recita come protagonista, Cinderella story.

The second name, "Erhard" was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother, originally from Germany, Mary Erhard; Duff also has German ancestry from his maternal grandmother, Amy Beulah Schlemmer. After her mother encouraged her to an acting career alongside her elder sister, Haylie Duff, both girls got more parts in theater productions in the area.
